Here’s what you need to know about calling 9-1-1 from your mobile phone.
Eastlink customers who require emergency assistance can call 9-1-1 from their mobile phone at any time, free of charge on the Eastlink network. Where 9-1-1 service is available, it’s provided in one of two ways:
E-9-1-1 is provided in most provinces in Canada where 9-1-1 service is available. E-9-1-1 has not yet launched in Newfoundland & Labrador, Yukon or the Northwest Territories, but all offer B-9-1-1. 9-1-1 service is not available in Nunavut and emergency services can be contacted using the local emergency number.
Keep these tips in mind if you need to call 9-1-1:
Always provide your name, phone number and the location you’re calling from.
Stay on the line as long as the operator requires. 9-1-1 calls are always free so take the time you need.
After hanging up, be prepared that the operator may need to call you back.
Don’t add 9-1-1 to your contacts so you don’t accidentally call it.
If you’re underground or too far from a network antenna, the quality or your call may be affected or you may not be able to connect to the network.
All mobile phones sold by Eastlink are equipped for E9-1-1. We don’t guarantee that mobile service, including 9-1-1, will work on your phone if it wasn’t purchased from us or if your phone was modified by a third party to unlock it or change the operating system.
When you dial 9-1-1, your number and approximate location, based on the nearest cell tower or GPS coordinates, are sent to emergency operators. If you’re underground or too far from a network antenna, your signal quality may be affected, so always remember to provide emergency operators with your number and location when you call 9-1-1.
Android users who’ve set VoIP-based apps like Viber and Skype as their default dialer, or who use these apps to make calls, may not be able to reach 9-1-1. This issue isn’t specific to Eastlink and could affect customers with any service provider.
We don’t recommend using VoIP apps as your default dialer. When using a VoIP app, always select Just Once when prompted if you’d like to make it your default dialer. If you’ve selected Always, you can change your dialer settings to ensure calls to 9-1-1 complete correctly.
To change your dialer settings:
Select Settings (or System Settings) on your phone.
Scroll down to Applications (may be listed as Apps or Application Manager).
Select the phone dialer application that was set as the default for dialing calls (ex. Skype or Viber).
Scroll down to the Launch by default section and click on the Clear defaults button.
